What is Capoeira?

Capoeira is the most unique martial art form in the world, begun over 500 years ago by the African people who were brought to Brazil and made slaves by the Portuguese. They created capoeira as a means of self-defense and freedom from their oppression, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.  Over time, and with the influence of many great Capoeira masters, it has become a world-wide symbol for the beauty and strength of the Brazilian people.

Capoeira fuses martial arts, dance, gymnastics, and music with the vibrance of the Brazilian culture.  In class, students learn how to control their bodies and their minds, and how to make a positive contribution to their community.  Capoeira is unique because it encourages creativity and is continually changing by integrating new ideas while never losing it’s roots.  Capoeira is addicting because it challenges you mentally and physically, and is something that you can tailor to your skill set.  ANYONE can do capoeira, and in capoeira, everyone is family.
